When classic first launched this was a toggle option in the system pane. Eventually blizzard made it automatic for all new accounts and removed the checkbox, BUT didnt enable it for all the people that didnt have it on. Type: /console SET chatClassColorOverride "0" into your chat box to enable this option on all default chat boxes.

I tried it with 41 and 40 both just to be sure it wasn’t capped at 40 (so 41 was just being ignored) and the results were the same. Today I started palying WoW and I noticed that names above npcs and players (or anything else, actually) are quite hard to read from distance. And extremely blurry/pixelated. Close distance, it looks fine:
